Mobilegeddon April 21st!
We’ve been busy this month developing mobile friendly websites for several clients. Google announced that from April 21st a website’s usability on mobile phones would be a more prominent part of their search algorithm and so the day was named Mobilegeddon with businesses worried they might drop down the Google rankings.
By some estimates, more than 60 percent of all Google searches are now performed on mobile devices, so it makes sense that Google wants to capitalize on this traffic and ensure the best possible experience for its users.
We mentioned in our recent newsletter that Google will be changing their algorithm to place greater emphasis on the need for websites to be easy to read on a mobile phone, iPad or tablet. In particular, Google is looking at size of text and the distance between clickable links so it’s important that you check this or you might find your Google ranking adversely affected. We have noticed that on some of the websites we manage, there have been messages in Google Webmaster Tools suggesting that action is needed to achieve this. It’s not clear how much emphasis Google will place on this but we think it can only help.
We think that this will become increasingly important – it’s always advisable to keep up with new technology and the use of phones and tablets is clearly here to stay.
Three clients have recently set up mobile versions of their sites – take a look on your phone at
